PRINCIPAL'S NEWSLETTER

February 2, 2010

Dear Miller Parents and Families,

It's hard to believe we've reached the mid-year mark in the school year! In my experience, this is always a good time to review student Behavioral Expectations and Disciplinary Consequences.  An updated power point presentation will be presented to all students this month. I have attached that same power point here for you. For most students and families it will be a review. For new students and families, it would be very helpful if you would review this as a family. Thank you for your support!

If you have question or concerns, please don't hesitate to call me at 714-228-32109 or email me at cindy_chaffee@cesd.us

  Pre-School Autism

Playground Buddies at Miller School

Fourth grade students at Miller School are helping to teach play skills to preschoolers with autism. One of the core deficits of students with autism is the development of reciprocal social interactions and building friendships. They need to be taught how to interact, make friends and play together.

Timothy Lemos, Andy Gallegos, Cedric Salao and Joshua Umali volunteer their recess times to help our preschoolers build playground skills. Whether the boys are teaching the preschoolers how to use the slide, swings, tunnel, or sandbox, these fourth graders make a difference for their little buddies every day.

Mrs. Dennison, teacher of our preschool SDC stated, "The preschoolers love their 'playground buddies'. The older boys are very gentle and patient with them, and treat the preschoolers like their own siblings." "When the children are interacting there are smiles everywhere," says Dennison.  "It's a win-win situation for all."
