BUENA TERRA SCHOOLWIDE DISCIPLINE POLICY

The staff at Buena Terra Elementary School has and maintains high expectations for achievement and behavior.  We are dedicated to a safe and orderly environment where all children learn in an uninterrupted atmosphere.
Buena Terra's schoolwide discipline policy is consistent with the standards of student conduct [reg. 5131] contained within the Rules and Regulations of the Centralia Board of Education.  The standards of student conduct state that "Students shall be expected to exhibit appropriate conduct that does not infringe upon the rights of others or interfere with the school program, nor affect the safety of students and staff. 

CLASSROOMS
Based on the premise no child has the right to disrupt the learning of others, the following rules or similar ones are used in the Buena Terra Classrooms:

  1. Listen to and follow directions the first time.
  2. Raise your hand and wait to be called upon before speaking or leaving your seat.
  3. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
  4. Work quietly and courteously.

Should rules not be followed, consequences may result.  Specific rules and consequences may vary according to grade level and classroom needs.  In case of severe infractions such as fighting and defiance of an adult, the student will be sent to the office for appropriate action.

PLAYGROUND 
Playground rules are developed with the health and safety of students in mind.  Specific rules for apparatus, equipment, and the playground are discussed in each classroom.  General rules include:

  1. Use equipment properly.
  2. Be courteous to your schoolmates and adults.
  3. Follow rules for any game you are playing.
  4. When bell rings, stop and walk to line.
  5. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself. 
  6. Stay within assigned playground.

SCHOOL RECESSES
Should rules not be followed, the consequences will be:

  • A pink behavior slip (citation) will be issued.

Citations result in:
First citation: Considered a warning/conference with teacher
Second citation: 1 day loss of recess (parent signature required)
Third citation:   3 days loss of recess (parent signature required)
Fourth citation:   Referral to principal
Citation consequences start over, each grading period. 

  • Severe behavior:
    • Fighting
    • Disrespectful or defiant to adult
    • Using profanity

Consequences:
Sent to principal.  Such behavior will result in a suspension from school
(1-5 days).  Parents will be called.
Grounds for expulsion (Ed. Code 48904.5):
Weapons or drugs brought to school, willful destruction of school property,
negligent injury to student or school employee.

AFTER SCHOOL
California law states, "A pupil shall not be detained in school for disciplinary or other reasons for more than one hour after the close of the maximum school day."
It is the policy of Buena Terra School to not detain a child for more than fifteen minutes without contacting parents should his/her behavior warrant it.

SCHOOLWIDE STUDENT RECOGNITION
To encourage good playground behavior, students will be recognized with "Caught being good" Golden Eagle slips.  For each 5 slips received, students may redeem them in the office after school for a reward.
